Helping Our Neighbors
Since the tornado of June 11, the City of Junction
City staff has been assisting the City of Chapman with clean-up
efforts. Our emergency response personnel were on the scene immediately.
Our Police Officers have assisted with security and our clerical
staff has been helping in the city office. There are so many details
that need to be taken care of in a major disaster like the Chapman
tornado. Our Grant Administrator, Sarah Talley, has given a great
deal of assistance with reimbursement paperwork to be submited to
the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a skill she learned during
our own natural disaster during December.
During a major disaster, it is often forgotten that
the sacrifice required of public servants is magnified by their
own personal loses. Employees of local governments are committed
to their communities and committed to helping the people they serve.
That is the case in Chapman where the public servants there are
working non-stop despite enduring personal tragedy. Chapman City
Clerk Marietta Lucas was coordinating the clean-up efforts for the
community while dealing with the loss of her home. Police Chief
Mike Brown was working nonstop to secure the safety of the residents
while dealing with the complete loss of his home. I know that each
was thankful that only one life was lost during the storm, but their
unwavering devotion to their community is an example for all of
us to follow. Please keep these two public servants and all of our
neighbors and friends in Chapman in your prayers. Chapman will rebuild
and be better than ever before as a result of this dreadful tragedy.
We learn many things from experiencing tragedies like
tornados, ice storms, and hail. We become better people for having
persevered during these difficult times. I’m glad we had the
ability to help our friends and neighbors in Chapman.
