Roofing

Can`t put off those roof repairs or re-shingling any longer? Contact the City Code Enforcement Division with any of your questions. We can tell you if the contractor you have chosen has current liability insurance and are licensed to work in Junction City.

If you`re the property owner, you can do the work yourself, but you need to apply for the building permit before you start your project if you are replacing four or more squares of roofing. A square of roofing is a 10x10 foot area ... so if you need more than 400 square feet of shingles for your project, you need to apply for a permit. Remember, costs of permits double if you start work without applying for a building permit before beginning.

If you`re not sure of the roof`s decking stability after you`ve torn off the old shingles, call the City Inspection Department. An Inspector will take a look at the decking and make a recommendation for you. Remember, these new shingles will probably be used for 10-15, maybe even 20 years. The investment in new decking if there is any question of its stability will save you money, time, and the headache of having to do this all over again.

When working on a roofing surface, remember to practice safety first.
Ladders should be on level ground with the base placed out at least one fourth of its height. Always face the ladder when going up and down. Go up the ladder slowly when carrying bundles of shingles.

Use a 2x4 with L-brackets (toe-boards) nailed to the roof as a foothold to keep from slipping off while you`re working.

If a steep roof, or you`re a little skittish about being on the roof, you may even want to use a rope tied around a chimney and your waist to prevent you from falling to the ground.

Always use the proper safety equipment for your project, head, eye, hand, and equipment guards should be a priority.

Roof Maintenance

Keep gutters and downspouts clean

Use downspout extensions to move water away from foundation

Remove ice and snow carefully to avoid damaging roof materials

Trim tree branches away from roof. Keep climbing roses, vines and ivy trimmed back from roof.

The best time for roof inspection is early spring after severe weather conditions subside.

Check roofs for damage after hail and windstorms move through the area.

Avoid climbing on the roof unless it’s necessary to avoid damaging materials.

Check the attic for signs of leaks. Be sure to check valleys and peaks carefully.

Use proper materials when installing new flashing. Use non-corrosive anchors.

Check caulking around flashing, chimneys and vent pipes every spring.
